Reusable To-Go Program

Reusable to-go container being handed form one person to another

We want YOU to reuse!

Dining Services partnered with the Undergraduate Student Senate, Housing, and the Office of Sustainability to offer an innovative Reusable To-Go (R2G) program that makes Virginia Tech a more sustainable place to live and work.

Reusable To-Go Containers

All students, faculty and staff have free access to this program regardless of meal plan status. Using Virginia Tech’s free Reusable To-Go program is a great way to reduce waste. Reusable containers are an alternative to compostable clamshells that will sometimes end up in the landfill due to improper waste sorting. Join us in doing the "green" thing and get your food in a free R2G container!

The Reusable To-Go containers for Fall 2025 will be available from West End, Owens, and Perry Place. The program utilizes GrubHub to track and return containers.

How does the program work?

  • Step 1: Sign up for Reusepass.
  • Step 2: Select your container in the GrubHub app.
  • Step 3: Take your food to go and enjoy!
  • Step 4: Return the container to West End, Owens, or Perry Place. Return the containers to the dish conveyor belts or a designated drop-off area (for after hours).

What if I lose my Reusable To-Go container?

  • It’s essential to bring your container back so that future Hokies can use this program, too! Notifications will be sent by push notifications through GrubHub. Ultimately, if you are unable to return the container, you will be charged a $5 fee through GrubHub.

Can I return or check out container for a friend?

  • The container will be connected to the GrubHub account through which it was ordered, so this is not recommended.

Why do I have to return my container?

  • The purpose of this program is to reduce waste on campus. By returning your container, you ensure they will be cleaned, sanitized, and reused which reduces the fiber clamshells in our dining units. Please make sure to return your containers so that future Hokies can use the program, too!
